Warehouse Management System (WMS) and Warehouse Control System (WCS) are often mentioned together, but they serve different layers of a warehouse operation. Understanding where one ends and the other begins helps you scope automation projects correctly.

What is a WMS?

A WMS manages inventory, orders, and warehouse processes at a business level — tracking what's in stock, where it's located, and what needs to be picked, packed, and shipped.

Best suited for:

  • Inventory visibility and accuracy
  • Order management
  • Labor planning
  • Multi-warehouse operations

What is a WCS?

A WCS operates at the equipment level — coordinating conveyors, sorters, AMRs, and other automation hardware in real time to execute the physical movement of goods.

Best suited for:

  • Real-time equipment orchestration
  • Sortation control
  • Conveyor and AMR coordination
  • High-speed automated facilities

Why most automated warehouses need both

A WMS decides what needs to happen; a WCS decides how the equipment executes it. Without a WCS, a WMS has no direct way to control automation hardware. Without a WMS, a WCS has no higher-level visibility into inventory or orders.

The short answer

Think of WMS as the brain for inventory and order decisions, and WCS as the nervous system that drives the equipment. Most automated facilities run both together, integrated through real-time data exchange.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a warehouse run WCS without a WMS?

Technically yes for simple automation, but most operations pair it with a WMS for inventory accuracy and order visibility.

Do WMS and WCS come from the same vendor?

Not necessarily — many operations integrate a best-of-breed WMS with a separate WCS, connected through APIs.

Where does an ERP fit alongside WMS and WCS?

ERP sits above the WMS, holding orders, purchasing, and financials. The WMS takes order and inventory data from ERP and turns it into warehouse tasks; the WCS turns those tasks into equipment movements. Three layers, each talking only to its neighbour.
